Looking for Springtime patterns?

I have the answer....2 new designs hot off the press.

First up is Blossoming Stars using Northcott's Blossoming Beauties collection by Teri Farrell-Gittins. This luscious collection features peonies, in all their full blown glory! The star centres are selectively cut from two peony prints and accents of shades of green and pink add depth to the design. The pattern includes 2 sizes: 60" x 74" (generous lap size) and 74" x 88" (bed size).

Order the pattern here.

And remember, you can see which shops purchased this collection by using Northcott's Product Finder (in the upper right corner of Northcott's collection page - at the link above).

Read more about the fabric designer, Teri, on her website Shoots and Blooms

The second pattern uses the Paris...Always A Good Idea! collection is also from Northcott

These fabrics are also available in quilt stores now.

My pattern, Postcards from Paris, features a distinctly French palette of Red, Blue and Cream to Featuring toiles with Paris landmarks, bicycles and postage stamps – your quilt will appeal to any traveller. This quilt is 57" x 70". Learn some nifty ways to use directional prints in this pattern.

Order the pattern here. You will also see the fabric requirements for this project at this link.

I hope you are busy making some new Spring projects!

A LOT has been going on at Patchworks Studio!

I've been super busy since I last posted in March!

A lot of pattern designing and writing, working with the amazing members of my local guild (Victoria Quilters' Guild) on a Basket Raffle fundraiser, making 2 quilts of my own and quilting a couple of others for my presentation at International Quilt Market in Portland and a trip to Quilt Canada in Vancouver with my Quilty Friends. Whew - what a busy time!

And now I can take a breath and catch up on my communications with YOU. I will share updates over the next few weeks.

First up are 2 of the patterns I published.

The first one uses O Canada fabrics from Northcott. This collection adds to the ongoing fabrics that are used for many quilters for Quilts of Valour.

Nothing says Canada like a maple leaf so that is the focus for my quilt.

The maple leaf is surrounded by a Polar Bear print and that 'looks-like-it's-pieced' border is really a wonderful STRIP-R fabric - strips that are 2" wide along the length of the fabric. Just like 'jelly roll' strips but you don't need to do the piecing!

A Poppy print is also used in this project to remind us to Remember.

The quilt is 61" x 74" - a great size for a Quilt of Valour.

Remember - Northcott supports Quilts of Valour through the sale of these fabrics.

Order your pattern here.

The 2nd pattern is the one I referred to in my last post - Maplewood Trail. Maple Leaves also appear in this fabric collection and the central panel was designed by Helene Knott.

I made the Scarlet version of this quilt to be displayed at International Quilt Market in Houston last fall.

Here it is hanging in the Northcott booth.

I also promised to make the quilt in the Woodland colourway for Bib 'n' Tucker quilting here in Victoria.

That's the update for today.  Watch the rest of the week for news from the Victoria Quilter' Guild Quilt Show and International Quilt Market.

Designing New Patterns - Fall Fabric Collections

Another task that has taken a lot of my time in the last few weeks is designing new patterns for upcoming fabrics. This can be a long and very detailed process.

These are the files for each pattern I have designed in the last few weeks.
It's a total of 7 NEW PATTERNS!
I design all my quilts and projects using Electric Quilt software. Over the years I have become a very experienced user of the software. I can 'sing and dance' with Electric Quilt!

When I am designing I use scans of the actual fabrics that are in development by Northcott. Sometimes I have some existing projects that have been waiting for just the right fabric.

Other times I'll get a 'seed' of an idea; perhaps do a small sketch on paper.

and then I use the software to design, develop and colour my idea.

Sometimes that first idea will be great; often it is not.   These are 'rejects' from this round of designing. I'll keep them though. Perhaps a future collection will be just right.

I often take that initial idea and it leads to other options. Perhaps it is another way to arrange the design, another way to colour patches with fabric and finally I'll have something I LOVE.

Most of my quilts are 'patchwork' but sometimes I need to add some applique to make a better design.  I need to show as accurate a representation of the quilt as possible so that means I need to DRAW the applique in the software too.

For one of the new designs I wanted to show motifs cut from one of the fabrics and appliqued on the quilt. That meant I had to draw the actual shape of the 'fish' that I wanted to applique. The pictures below show the drawing space in Electric Quilt where I traced a fish from the fabric and a part of the quilt where I placed this fish and another one.

Sometimes I need to make parts of my design using fabric so I can be sure it 'works'. Here are some test samples for a couple of the patterns.  I got VERY EXCITED when I figured out how these sections can be made with very easy patchwork!

I made lots of notes at this stage. They will help me when I write the pattern. Even the seam pressing details can help a quilter be more successful with their piecing. Pressing will be important for the 'blues' sample, something that I discovered by doing these fabric tests.

Of course the design is just the first step!  I still need to calculate the fabric amounts required, write the instructions, draw diagrams, check and re-check and edit, edit, edit.

And, finally, there is a final pattern that can go out all over the world to inspire quilters to make their next quilt.

I hope this gives you just a bit of insight into the processes I use when designing new patterns.

Little Ones on the Way?

Are you expecting some additions to your family? Want a couple of quick quilts for gifts? Thinking of getting ahead of the gift giving holidays?  I have 2 NEW patterns that might be just what you are looking for.

First is Baby Beginnings. I designed this quilt because I LOVE this new fabric collection from Northcott.  Who can resist flannel fabric with ONESIES! The fabric is called Hello Baby - what a great name

This fabric collection has 3 different colourways and I couldn't choose just one for the pattern - sometimes we want a quilt for a little girl, sometimes for a boy and sometimes we are making it ahead and there ARE new parents who have decided to be SURPRISED!

So I included all 3 colours in my pattern for a baby quilt and cot quilt.

PS368 Baby Beginnings - Baby Quilt 36" x 45"

PS368 Baby Beginnings - Cot Quilt 36" x 36"

Other Colourways for both sizes

These fabrics will be in your local quilt shops starting July (that's just around the corner!) and the pattern is available now.  Order this pattern from my Patchworks Studio Store TODAY!

The other new pattern also uses a Flannel fabric. This fabric collection is called Snow Bears - wintery polar bears having fun in the snow! This is a Quilts for Kids collection. That means that a percentage of all sales of these fabrics is donated to Quilts for Kids Inc.

I called this pattern Bear Tracks - I can imagine bear footprints in the snow!

My pattern includes a large quilt (54" x 74"), small quilt (39" x 44") and a pillow (11" x 27").

These fabrics will also be in your local quilt shops starting July and the pattern is available now.  Order this pattern from my Patchworks Studio Store TODAY!

Hope these patterns give you inspiration for some fun summertime projects!

New Patterns - it was a Busy Fall 2016

I have just added 5 new patterns to my website.  Most of them were designed in the summer last year and the final pattern development was completed just before the holidays. This brings me to 22 new patterns published in 2016!

Dancing Orchids combines piecing and appliqué - but you don't need to make the orchids! They are 'fussy cut' from the orchid print in the Artisan Spirit Sandscapes Orchids collection by Northcott and then fused in place.

This pattern includes 2 sizes: you can add the asymmetrical border for the large quilt (46" x 58") or make the smaller quilt (35" x 47") without the border.

I have included one of my favourite appliqué shapes in the quilt too - the Monstera leaf. I have used this design for my Machine Quilting with Decorative Stitches workshop and as a quilting design.

Buy this pattern.

On the Move: I have wanted to make this pattern for a couple of years. It is based on the wedding quilt I made for my daughter and son-in-law in 2014.  I just had to wait for the perfect fabric.  Hipster on the Go by Northcott was just what I was looking for!

This pattern has 2 sizes and 2 colourways.

The large quilt is 56" x 65" and the small quilt is 39" x 44" (perfect for a baby quilt).

Order the pattern HERE.

The next design uses Island Batik fabrics and is a
Give & Take
Appliqué pattern (one fused design equals TWO blocks).

This Holiday Bells table runner is 18½" x 48".  It's NOT too early to get started on a holiday project for 2017!

Order the pattern HERE.

I had a lot of fun working with panels for the next pattern. Yes....this quilt uses 2 of the same panel so you don't need to do all that amazing piecing!

I cut the panels into sections and recombined the pieces with 3 coordinating fabrics to make this 59" x 67" quilt.

The Psychedelic panels are from the ColorWorks Concepts 2 collection by Northcott. I called this design Galaxy Twist.

And the last pattern is one for the golfers in your life. A great collection of prints called On the Green make this quilt lots of fun. There is a golf course scene, golf balls on the grass and golf clubs and golf bags and shoes. There is a fun allover print with 'tees' as well.

Two sizes are included in this pattern - large quilt 56" x 72" and small quilt 48" x 60".  Piecing is very easy for these quilts and they make a perfect gift.

What else could I call it? Tee Time!

The quilts I made for International Quilt Market

It is time to SHARE....all those bits and pieced you have been seeing in my What's on My Table, Tuesday? Blog Posts.

I made 2 quilts for upcoming fabric collections (and Patchworks Studio patterns) for the Northcott booth at Market.

First is Galaxy Twist.
Galaxy Twist

This quilt uses fabrics from the Phase III ColorWorks Concepts collection. I used 2 Psychedelic panels from this upcoming collection plus 2 coordinates and ColorWorks black to make my quilt.

Psychadelic Panel
Fabrics will be in quilt shops in March 2017. Watch for this pattern in early March.

PS - sign up for my newsletter and you will be first to know what the pattern is released.

The second quilt is Dancing Orchids. I used Artisan Spirit Sandscapes Orchids for this quilt.

This collection delivers to stores in February 2017 and the pattern for this quilt will be available then.

Dancing Orchids

It has been a busy few weeks and I am so pleased with both these new quilts.

Watch for new designs coming soon. I have 2 new patterns to write in the next couple of weeks. Watch the blog (and the Newsletter) for the release.

More New Patterns

My pattern publication process starts well in advance of the final release. I create all my designs using Electric Quilt software, usually before fabrics are released to the marketplace. Then, when it is close to the time when fabrics will be delivering to quilt shops I write the final pattern, have it printed and start shipping patterns to distributors, shops and quilters.

This week I have 2 more patterns designed with fabrics that will be delivering to shops in October and November.

First is a sweet children's project using Northcott's Tee Pee Time flannel collection. I called this pattern Let's Camp Out.

We loved taking our children camping and my daughter and her family are continuing this tradition. My granddaughter, Alice, (only 5 months old) has already been on 2 camping trips this summer!

The pattern includes 2 sizes:

The 38" x 45" quilt starts with the 36" wide panel and is a quick and easy project.

The 56" x 74½" twin size quilt is perfect for YOUR little camper.

Skill level for this pattern is beginner and above.

This quilt would be great with your choice of fabrics too.

BUY THE PATTERN

The second pattern also uses a panel. This is a digital panel designed by Phillip Allder. Supporting fabrics are used for pieced and plain borders to frame the picture of the leopard.
