Time to Quilt - Block 15

Today's block probably looks very familiar to you. It is a variation of a log cabin block called Courthouse Steps. You can get the pattern for today's blocks on the Banyan Batiks Facebook Page.

The instructions for the block include quite a few seams.  I adapted this block to simplify the piecing and you'll learn a new trick with my method today.

You will need to change the cutting for the block to use my method.
Cut these pieces to make 2 blocks:

Centre Square: (1) 3 1/2" square from each fabric

First Round: (4) 2" x 5" rectangles from each fabric

Second Round: (4) 2" x 8" rectangles from each fabric

To begin, sew a 'partial seam' to start surrounding the centre square using contrasting 2" x 5" rectangle. Match the end of the square and rectangle and sew to the red dot; backstitch a couple of stitches:

Follow these steps to sew the remaining 2" x 5" rectangles around the centre square:

Now sew the remaining part of the first seam to complete this round.

Your block will look like this:

Repeat these steps with the 2" x 8" rectangles as shown. Sew the partial seam indicated by the red arrow.

I hope you try this easy method to make these blocks.  And here are some quilts you might like to try.

I changed the colouring for one set of blocks.

And 2 colours of blocks and some solid ones for a Quilt of Valour.
