Romneya Coulteri
(Matilija Poppy - Papaveraceae)
Photographed at Butchart Gardens, June 2015
The flower blossoms are approximately 10 inches wide;
crepe-papery petals surround a large central cluster of yellow stamens.

My reference book, Sunset Perennials, tells me this is a very easy plant to grow. It grows in any kind of soil and established plants tolerate extreme drought. Unfortunately it can also be invasive. I suspect that is why it grows in a small, enclosed area next to the original Butchart home.
