From Photo to Threadwork - WIN this DVD!

My friend Sarah Ann Smith has a great new Quilting Arts Workshop available on DVD or download. It’s called Art Quilt Design from Photo to Threadwork, with Fabric Collage & Machine Quilting.

Yes, that title is quite a 'mouthful' but this DVD includes it all!

Sarah has such a friendly and helpful manner and it really comes through as you watch her tell you about the materials she uses to create her art quilts based on her photographs. She includes all the BRAND names so you know exactly what she uses to achieve her results.

Here is Sarah with all the supplies she uses - and some of her wonderful quilts on the wall behind her. You will love the story about how she created the composition and shadows for her quilt 'Conversations I' (the one with the table and chairs).  Livin' on the edge, Sarah!

Sarah shows you how to choose a photograph with exaggerated contrast and talks about creating a good composition by cropping the photo (or even re-arranging things or combining more than one photograph). She shows you how to create the pattern using your final photograph and how to enlarge it if you want to make a larger piece.

An area that was very helpful for me: how to make your fabric go further by colouring it with Derwent Intense pencils and paints. You know what it's like....you don't have just the right fabric. Sarah shows you how to make it!

Sarah shows you how to put Misty Fuse on your fabrics and how she builds the main focus images following her pattern and why selecting the right fabric value is so important. I really liked how she built her background with lots of fabrics too.

And there's more....Sarah shows you how she selects threads for the machine stitching. She explains why she chooses the thread types and colours, making it easy to understand her thinking behind the choices. Then it is over to the sewing machine to bring the piece to life with free motion stitching.

I have a TON of photographs from my teaching trip to Hawaii and have been wanting to create a quilt based on my botanical photos. After watching Sarah's DVD I feel more confident. Perhaps this will be the project I start on Boxing Day (read the posts below about this....).

*******************************************************************************************************
Sarah is also the author of the best selling book, Thread Work Unraveled (also available in the store on her website). This is the text that I recommend to my Free Motion Studio students. It is packed with information on thread, needles and threadwork and the photographs of amazing quilts are inspiring.

why would I like to win this amazing sounding DVD- well, first I'd like get into thread painting as a way to unleash my creativity, but first I want to explore how the experts go about it, get great tips and find out what tools I truly need to do a great job.
and second, I'd just like to have some fun with fabric and thread.
This DVD sounds like i will provide the info I need for both.
Thanks for this chance to win,
Lorena at Rena722@gmail.com

Hi Daphne,

I'm always looking for new challenges. Now that my ability to use thread on fabric is much more developed, using Sarah's DVD as a visual way to learn and practice will really be fun. Thanks for the opportunity.

I'd love to win a copy of the DVD to learn new techniques to apply to my own work. It'll be the next best thing to taking a class in person! I'm glad I've had the opportunity to 'meet' new artists on this hop such as yourself, else I'd never known about your beautiful work. Best, Ann in NC

I enjoyed Sarah's presentation as part of one of the Samplers at Quilt Festival. A lot of the things she had to say resonated with me and I know I could learn much from her DVD.
