Time to Quilt - Block 3

Block 3 is now available on the Banyan Batiks Facebook Page

Again each block pattern contains a picture of the block and
instructions for making the block with two options with contrasting fabrics. 

I am using my Banyan Batiks Tapa Cloth collection
along with essentials coordinates to make my blocks.

Here are my blocks today:

The dark print is from the Seafoam Colourway in my Tapa Cloth collection for Banyan Batiks.

The pink fabric is a Banyan Batiks 'essential' - Shadows.

For this block I needed to use the 'connector corners' method to make the small triangles. A diagonal line is drawn on the wrong side of the small squares. This is the sewing line and then the square is pressed toward the outside and the layers underneath are trimmed leaving a 1/4" seam allowance.

I have a great marker for this step. It is the Sewline Trio marker - 3 colours in one marker: gray, white and pink. I don't have to use different markers for the light and dark squares.

Here are pictures showing how I marked my squares. I love my small 6" Add-a-Quarter ruler for this step. It is easier to hold than a wide and long rotary cutting ruler. Why is it labelled - I take it with me to all my classes when I teach - and I recommend students put an 'address label' on their tools too. It is so easy to forget something when you are packing up after class. This way, we can get your item back to you!

Okay, how about a quilt design using these blocks?

Here is a 'straight set' arrangement with 20 blocks (14 dark and 6 light).

I added sashing between the blocks (1 1/2" finished and a 1 1/2" border).

This quilt would measure 43" x 54" - a baby size or wall size (a lot of work for that size!)

Did you know you get more 'mileage' from blocks when you arrange them diagonally
(also called 'on point')? 

I can make the same number of blocks (14 dark and 6 light = 20 blocks)but this time my quilt would measure 53" x 65".

Add a few more blocks (total of 30) for a 65" x 78" quilt.

There is no sashing for these 'on-point' quilts and the plain squares are cut
the same size as my blocks (9 1/2"). 

Do you know how to cut the side triangles and the ones for the corners of the quilt?
