Posh Santa uses the Quick Curve Mini Ruler by Sew Kind of Wonderful

I had great fun making my class sample.

I also had fun quilting him. I used a variety of free-motion designs in the different areas. I chose a swirling texture for his beard.

For the background I referred to a new book I found at Quilt Market in Kansas City: step-by-step Texture Quilting by Christina Cameli.

My students have been using her previous book for my Free Motion Studio workshop. (This workshop is on the schedule too - 5 weekly sessions, starting Wednesday, September 25th.)

There are 65 new Free-Motion and Walking-Foot designs in the book - everything from swirls and whorls to feathers and grids. It was the grids that intrigued me for this quilt. Everything in the quilt is based on a 4" square. That made a grid easy to stitch with my walking foot. I stitched 'on point' squares over the entire background.

Then, how to enhance that grid?  I chose one of the first grid-based designs in the book because it reminded me of a tin roof ceiling and gave the quilt an old-fashioned feel. To 'jazz' it up a bit I stitched the grid and the motifs with Superior Glitter thread. A bit of sparkle to the 'tin'.
